Trade-in Policy

These are the rules for trading-in books at our shop.  Please read them carefully and make sure you understand them.  We reserve the right to change this policy as needed, at our discretion.

  1. No cash value.  Trade-in credit has no cash value.  You can only apply it to buy other books.  All trade-ins are final.

  2. Discretionary. All trades are at our discretion.  We may refuse a trade for any reason.  See the list below (#8) of some factors we consider.

  3. Redemption. Trade-in credit is redeemable for up to 50% of any purchase, excluding books priced over $25 and non-book items.  For instance, if you have $10 credit on file, to buy a $10 book you may pay $5 out of trade-in credit and the remaining $5 with cash or card.  By law, sales tax applies to the non-trade-in portion of any purchase.

  4. Time valid.  Credit must be used within 12 months of the trade.

  5. Amounts.  For accepted books, we offer credits of $1.00 for mass market paperbacks; $2.00 for trade paperbacks and hardcovers missing their dust jackets; $3.00 for hardcovers with dust jackets; $1.00 for small and/or softcover kids’ books; and $2.00 for large hardcover kids’ books.

  6. Volume & timing.  We cannot accept more than 25 books per person per week.  We do our best to process trade-ins on the same day, but it may take several hours or until the following business day.

  7. Books not creditedYou must pick up any books we do not accept for trade-in within one business day after we notify you by email, text, phone, or voicemail.  Please provide accurate contact information. We will dispose of any books not accepted for trade-in on the second day.

  8. What we consider. Factors we consider in deciding whether to accept a book include our inventory needs and your books’ condition. We do not accept mystery or romance novels; dictionaries or encyclopedias; ex-library books; Advance Reader Copies (ARCs); Readers’ Digest, Time Life, or similar imprints; textbooks, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, or magazines; or badly damaged books.

  9. Phone number and email required. You must provide a valid phone number and email address for us to process and keep your credit on file.
